Schools out and for many families the summer is just ramping up. I love the summer and all the traditional events and activities it brings with it. Pimms? yes please, BBQ? yes please, Pick Your Own, yes please, Trips to the beach, yes please, Sporting events, yes please!! With a little one in tow we are now on the look out for family friendly activities and while I hadn’t initially considered a day out at the races I am so glad we went this weekend.
Horse racing is the Queen’s favourite sport, it has a huge following around the world and is rich with tradition. There are famous courses across the country and yet I have only been to a race day once despite having lived near both Cheltenham and Newmarket at various points in my life. I’ve never even been to a Ladies Day! So when Great British Racing invited us to attend a family day at Newmarket Racecourse I was excited to find out more about what a day at the races really entails.
We happily dressed for the occasion and it really made it feel like a special event. On arrival it took us a moment to locate the family enclosure but everyone was so friendly and helpful and once we were in we headed straight for the merry go round. The theme for the family day was Great British Summer and in addition to the play area, we had access to a variety of free activities including face painting, donkey rides and a Punch and Judy show. The donkey ride in particular was a huge hit with our daughter.
We were amazed to see how prepared some families were who where busy erecting gazebos and setting up incredible picnics. Being our first time we made our way back to the Grandstand and Premier enclosures to explore the impressive variety of food and drink stands, needless to say I headed straight for the Pimms and our daughter went straight for the ice cream.
With the weather fairly mixed we made the most of a sunny spell and walked over to the pre-parade and parade ring to see the horses before joining the crowds to watch some of the races. Despite it raining through two of the races the atmosphere was great and the crowds stayed out to watch.
We all had a great day, our daughter loved seeing the horses and thoroughly enjoyed all the family entertainment that had been put on and we even bumped into friends while we were there. With the family enclosure tickets at only £11 per adult and children under 18 being free I was really impressed at how affordable a day out it can be, especially if you pack a picnic and assuming you don’t get too involved in the betting!
Newmarket Racecourse has themed family days every weekend throughout the summer holidays alongside its hugely popular Newmarket Nights, you can find out all the details over at StirrUpSummer. In fact children have free access to nearly all horse racing fixtures throughout the year (when attending with an adult of course). I’ll be looking out for more affordable family days out, if you have any suggestions please do get in touch!
